Hi all

We are from Australia and thinking of moving to Malaysia under Malaysia my second home retirement scheme. We have 2 small primary school children and not sure about the schooling cost in KL or Penang.  International schools are outside our budget so any advise about this.

Hi there,

Depending on the age of your children, one or both may be eligible for a partial scholarship from the Australian International School Malaysia. There are scholarships available from Year 5 to 11. Alternatively, if you're happy for them to attend a school with a different curriculum, there are a number of other international schools in Malaysia which may also offer similar schemes. It's worthwhile researching all available options as some schools are quite generous in this respect.

Otherwise, there is the option of local public schools in Malaysia – however, teaching is in Malay, so the language barrier may be an issue. You can read more on our Education and Schools in Malaysia page.

Best of luck.

I am moving from HK to Kuala Lumpur next year.

I keep checking schools but found out the international school fee is quite high.  Apart from which is much more easily to enrol, but the fee is similar to Hong Kong.

Do I have more options like private schools.  It has very less information about private schools from internet.

Hi there,

International schools tend to be expensive across the board – private schools may be less so but this will vary from school to school. For more info, you can have a look at the Expat Arrivals page about Education and Schools in Malaysia. Information about fees and other costs are usually easy to find on school websites, so it may well be worthwhile going through the websites of several private schools to see what your options are. As I said above, bear in mind that some schools may offer financial aid. Again, info about this can be obtained on individual website. To start this process, a Google search of "private schools in Malaysia" should do the trick. Often there are websites who have compiled lists of such schools.

Best of luck.
